Alentejo’s architectural identity is defined by its luminous plains, whitewashed villages and enduring vernacular traditions. In their Alentejo portfolio, Sabrab Architecture celebrates this heritage while introducing contemporary sensibilities—melding rugged local materials, minimalist lines and sustainable strategies to create spaces that feel both timeless and fresh.
Adaptive Reuse at Forte da Graça
At the historic Forte da Graça in Elvas, Sabrab demonstrates deep respect for monumental heritage. Their sensitive intervention preserves thick masonry walls and vaulted interiors, while discreetly inserting modern amenities—glass-enclosed walkways, energy-efficient lighting and climate controls—so that the fortress remains a living venue for cultural events. The design balances authenticity with subtle contemporary accents, ensuring visitors encounter both the fort’s storied past and its reinvention for today’s needs.
Ethnography Museum: Dialogue Between Past and Present
In the Alentejo Ethnography Museum, Sabrab explores the region’s rural traditions through form and material. The museum’s low-slung volumes are clad in local cork panels and white limewash, evoking nearby farmsteads. Large picture-windows frame exhibits of traditional tools against rolling fields, while internal courtyards provide natural daylight and ventilation. Circulation flows intuitively, guiding visitors through a narrative of Alentejo’s agricultural and artisanal legacies.
Envisioning Herdade do Magarreiro
Their forthcoming Herdade do Magarreiro project embodies Sabrab’s forward-looking ethos. Nestled amid cork oaks and olive groves, the estate will feature a cluster of pavilions for guest lodgings, tasting rooms and event spaces—each oriented to maximize solar gain in winter and shade in summer. Green roofs, rainwater harvesting and locally sourced stone ensure a minimal environmental footprint, while linear pathways and outdoor terraces integrate indoor and outdoor living seamlessly.
Across these projects, Sabrab Architecture demonstrates that Alentejo design need not be bound by nostalgia nor constrained by modernism alone. By honoring context, championing sustainability and embracing subtle innovation, they craft buildings that resonate with the region’s soul while offering renewed functionality, comfort and beauty.
